- This game was beautiful. Unfortunately it fell a little flat through the gameplay and storyline. The dialogue wasn't that interesting, the fighting was pretty boring and it became tedious after a while and the platforming was nothing compared to the first game.

(CNN) -- 'Alice: Madness Returns' is full of twisted imagery, strange combat weapons and puzzles that don't really tax the imagination.
The new title (Rogue Entertainment, Electronic Arts) is a follow-up to the 2000 PC and Mac game, 'American McGee's Alice.' Our heroine has been through the looking glass, and in and out of a psychiatric ward, but she's still battling for her sanity.
First of all, this is an M (Mature)-rated game, and they aren't kidding. This is not Disney's 'Alice in Wonderland,' and the visuals and subject matter are definitely adult.

The game starts out with Alice living in Victorian London under the care of a doctor who is trying to help her deal with memories of a fire that killed her family. The strain of dealing with those memories causes Alice to return to what she believes is the safety of Wonderland.
Upon her arrival, she discovers that it is being slowly destroyed by an Infernal Train, a huge locomotive that leaves destruction in its wake, including creatures made of oil and machines. As the game progresses, the lines between reality and Wonderland blur, and Alice must stop the train before it wipes out her mind.
At its heart, 'Alice: Madness Returns' is a platformer game that requires winding through a level with lots of jumping around to get from point to point. There is also side-scrolling shooter action in a few areas, providing a different type of play, but, overall, the gameplay is very linear.

The course is laid out before you pretty clearly; but if there is any confusion, hidden arrows can show you the way. How do you find the arrows? By shrinking, of course.
Alice has the ability to shrink at will, an action that reveals written clues that she can access only when she's small. Often, those clues point out secret passages that lead to collectible items and hidden goodies.
The environment is macabre and demented. Other characters and creatures have twisted features such as enlarged heads or oversized limbs. Since the game is a battle for Alice's sanity, it all fits in quite nicely, if not grotesquely.
However, a wonky camera that changes angles on its own and sometimes reveals the insides of walls at times makes the beautiful scenery moot. It also creates problems when jumping from platform to platform, as the camera moves so you can't see your intended landing spot.
The entire mood is one of disbelief. Alice remains calm and detached, no matter what the situation or scenario. The enemies and other characters are left to fill in the emotion and provide some sort of excitement.
Familiar characters -- such as the Mad Hatter, Cheshire Cat and the Caterpillar -- appear, themselves altered by mechanical limbs and distorted faces.
The voice acting was difficult to understand at times and hard to hear even after adjusting the audio settings. The characters all speak with a heavy British accent, appropriate for the game's setting and time period but coming at times too fast to be completely understood.
In combat, Alice eventually will have five weapons at her disposal -- a Vorpal Blade, Hobby Horse, Peppergrinder, Teapot Cannon and Clockwork Bomb. Each has its own particular strength and weakness and affects enemies differently when used.
The weapons can be upgraded into stronger versions by collecting and spending teeth (yes, teeth) gathered along the journey. Gold teeth, worth five times more than the ivory version, are harvested after beating tough enemies.

The more difficult enemies usually took some combination of different weapons to defeat, but there were no hints as to what was needed. Trial and error was the best teacher.
Alice hacks and slashes and bashes like a born killer. She does it without remorse and ignores the gore splashing across her clothes.
She also has an ability called Hysteria, which kicks in when her health is low and greatly enhances her power. The 'hysteria' surrounding visuals also change, turning the world into a stark black-and-white scene brightly splattered red with the blood of Alice's enemies.
Diehard gamers will notice a nice nod to another game that featured battles of the mind: 'Psychonauts.' In one room, a lone figure wearing goggles (a la Raz from 'Psychonauts') sits in a chair, one hand to his temple and the other stretched out. It was a cute touch and a fun respite from the mayhem.
Plainly said, this is no bedtime story. 'Alice: Madness Returns' is filled with rage, dementia and mature subject matter that can be very disturbing. About halfway through the game, I stopped trying to make sense of it all and just went along for the ride.

As seeing skeletal faces on playing cards became normal, my play enjoyment rose. Collecting memories of the night of the fire along the way also gave the game a detective-style feel that let me concentrate on that as I was merrily blasting away.
A couple of levels seemed to extend on arbitrarily and didn't add anything to the game except more time spent doing the same jumping from platform to platform. They seemed tacked on in an effort to extend gameplay time.
The ending was unexpected, and the final boss battle not as hard as some previous fights. However, in the context of the rest of the game, the outcome should have been foreseen. It will take a particular type of gamer to enjoy 'Alice: Madness Returns' -- one who doesn't like 'normal.'
'Alice: Madness Returns' was released Tuesday in North America and will be released Thursday in Europe for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It is rated M for Mature because of blood and gore, sexual themes, strong language and violence. This review was done with a retail copy played on the Xbox 360.
